GHK-Cu Microneedle Delivery for Androgenetic Alopecia — Evidence Review

GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to copper) delivered via dermal microneedling has emerging evidence for hair regrowth in androgenetic alopecia. The peptide stimulates dermal fibroblasts and prolongs the anagen phase of hair follicles. A systematic review of microneedle-delivered GHK-Cu is in preparation by the RxCompareHub editorial team.

The peptide — GHK-Cu

GHK-Cu is glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to a copper ion. It is the most-studied copper peptide for skin regeneration. The peptide stimulates dermal fibroblasts, upregulates collagen and elastin synthesis, and (in hair-specific studies) prolongs the anagen growth phase of hair follicles.

Microneedle delivery

GHK-Cu applied topically to intact skin has limited transdermal penetration. Dermal microneedling (typically 0.5–1.5 mm needles, 1–2× weekly) creates transient channels that substantially improve peptide delivery to the dermal layer where follicles live. The combination of microneedling-induced wound-healing response plus GHK-Cu delivery is the active treatment.

Evidence in androgenetic alopecia

Published studies (Pickart et al., Pyo et al., Trink et al.) report increased hair density, increased anagen-to-telogen ratio, and improved hair caliber with microneedle-delivered GHK-Cu in androgenetic alopecia. The evidence base is smaller than for FDA-approved minoxidil and finasteride but is growing.

RxCompareHub systematic review in preparation

The RxCompareHub editorial team is preparing a systematic review of GHK-Cu microneedle delivery in androgenetic alopecia, planned for submission to American Journal of Clinical Dermatology in 2026.
